The Descent

from Adoration of the Muses by Bryan A. Crumpler

about

"The Descent" was originally inspired by Mendelssohn's descent into Fingal's Cave, known for its magical sounds and hexagonally jointed basalt columns. This pilgrimage inspired his "Hebrides Overture"; hence, the "He Brides" working title applied when this work was scored for DWC, "Dead White Composers" (2022). Its deep rich bass and subdued melody are complemented by ethereal Strings and hushed Winds to mimic the dark descent of Orpheus into the depths of Hades to retrieve his most beloved muse, Eurydice. This Adriatic descent is symbolic of the resilience of the artist and their existential plight: going to hell and back for their muses.
